Reflexology (or Reflex Therapy) is a complementary therapy that aims to encourage the body to relax and work naturally to restore its own balance. It is based on the belief that all parts of the body are reflected in the feet and hands and by applying pressure to these areas, it has an effect on the corresponding part of the body and thus restore balance.
It is believed to have a history that traces back over 5,000 years to ancient Egypt, India and China.Reflexology was introduced to the West in the 1900’s as ‘Zone Therapy’ by Dr William Fitzgerald and was then further developed by Eunice Ingham in the 1930’s.
As mentioned, Reflexologists believe that areas on the foot act as ‘mirrors’ of the body’s various organs and systems. By using pressure techniques minute granular areas can often be felt in the foot. It is thought that this occurs in the part that corresponds to the part of the body that is out of balance. The Reflexologist’s pressure and massage techniques are designed to break down these granular areas.
